HEATING & COOLING

Vaillant Announces New Partnership with OVO

Vaillant's new partnership with OVO introduces Heat Pump Plus, cutting heat pump running costs to 15p per kWh for UK homes, potentially saving homeowners £495 yearly. This deal supports the UK's goal of increasing heat pump installations, providing separate energy rates for heat pumps and household use. It targets to make sustainable heating more accessible, coinciding with the UK government's initiatives like the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

This collaboration between Vaillant and OVO marks a significant move towards affordable, low carbon heating solutions for UK households.

Beyond Boilers with Heat Pumps

Discover the shift in heating technology with hydronic heat pumps, a sustainable alternative to traditional boilers. Offering both heating and cooling, these systems are differentiated by their unique piping requirements and efficient operation. With types including air-to-water and water-to-water (geothermal), hydronic heat pumps present an eco-friendly solution for modern homes. The Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating, alongside the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, is developing training to support this transition. Additionally, innovations in domestic hot water technologies and the strategic use of buffer tanks enhance system performance, addressing challenges like short cycling and optimising the coefficient of performance (COP).

Embrace the future of heating with the efficient, versatile capabilities of hydronic heat pumps.

Heat Pumps vs Boilers: The key things you need to know

Christina Woodger provides a detailed comparison between heat pumps and traditional boilers, focusing on technology, costs, and significant benefits. As the UK moves toward renewable, low-carbon heating options to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions targets, heat pumps are becoming an increasingly popular choice. Currently, less than 1% of UK homes have heat pumps, whereas 80% rely on gas boilers. The government, however, sees heat pumps as a crucial heating method for the future.

Highlights of the article include:

  • Functionality: Boilers use gas (or other fuels) to heat water, circulating it around the home. Heat pumps, however, absorb heat from the outside air or ground to heat water, without burning fuel.

  • Cost: Heat pumps generally have a higher upfront cost than boilers, but the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) can significantly lower installation costs.

  • Efficiency and Environment: Heat pumps operate with greater efficiency—up to three times more than boilers—and use electricity, contributing less to carbon emissions.

  • Running Costs: Though heat pumps use electricity, which is currently more expensive than gas, special tariffs are being introduced to reduce their operational costs.

  • Noise and Comfort: With correct installation, heat pumps operate quietly and provide consistent heating, similar to boilers, even in colder conditions.

Addressing misconceptions and highlighting these differences is crucial for homeowners considering a transition to more sustainable heating solutions, supporting the UK's goal to decarbonise residential heating.
